Diary from Gaza: "What you see on the news is only a small part of what happens here"
Multimedia diary of a Palestinian university lecturer during the first weeks of the Gaza bombardments, featuring inline audio fragments, video and photography.
Palestinian university lecturer Zakaria Shehab has been keeping a diary since the bombardments on Gaza began. Through voice messages and rare moments of contact, he describes life in the north of the Gaza Strip. This piece for De Standaard presents his testimony as a multimedia longread: text, photos and video from Shehab himself, interspersed with inline audio fragments that play directly within the text as you read. The reader hears Shehab's voice as he recounts losing 42 family members, the search for water and food, and the nightly bombardments. The combination of diary structure, raw footage and audio makes the story unusually direct and personal.
