The heavy toll of one year of war in Ukraine, in numbers, stories and images

On February 24, 2023, exactly one year after the Russian invasion, De Standaard published an extensive multimedia longread on the heavy toll of one year of war. The piece maps the impact through five core chapters.

The layout deliberately breaks from traditional scrollytelling: sequential video combinations show the war in raw footage, placed side by side for maximum impact. The animated map of Ukraine shows day by day how the frontline shifted, built with Python using shapefiles from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Unlike many other projects, everything (design, development and text) was handled entirely by the in-house project team.
