Will nitrogen lock down Flanders?
Investigative piece on the nitrogen crisis in Flanders, with a scrollytelling map of overburdened Natura 2000 areas and impact simulations via Aerius.
Flanders leads Europe in nitrogen pollution: 80% of protected Natura 2000 areas receive more nitrogen than they can handle. A landmark court ruling threatens to lock down all permit granting. This piece for De Standaard maps the crisis with an interactive scrollytelling map showing overburdened areas by province. We also used the Dutch Aerius calculator to simulate nitrogen impact of real projects, from the Saeftinghe dock in the Port of Antwerp to chicken farms in Ravels. The data visualizations and Aerius simulations made abstract nitrogen figures tangible, showing that virtually nowhere in Flanders escapes the consequences.
